Quick Takes
- Sunday was Catechist Sunday and the commissioning Mass for the Scripture teachers for 2013. It's the first time since I've been a Catechist that the parish has done anything special for Catechist Sunday. It just happened to be 5 years since I started which meant I was given a certificate. Nobody teaches scripture classes so they can stand at the front in church and get a clap, but it was still nice!
- My mum arrived from France on Saturday. She's been using a pedometer and brought one for me. I walked 3km on Saturday and never even left the house!
- The boys are back at school. We don't give Ritalin to Peter over the school holidays and I'm trying to send him back without it. When he misbehaves at school it's usually because he forgot to take a tablet. I used to think that proved the tablets were working but now I'm wondering if the behaviour problems might (at least in part) be a withdrawal symptom. We'll just have to try him without it and see.
- Allan turned 60 last week (the photo above is from the year we got married.) He was hoping to get a UK bus pass but apparently he's not eligible until Oct 2014. He likes clocks so I bought him a mantel clock that has a rotating pendulum and chimes. It has a battery so hopefully it will keep better time than the wind-up wall clock I bought for his 50th!
- I downloaded the first 3 seasons of The Big Bang Theory to keep the boys quiet while Mum is here (I haven't let them watch it before.) There's an awful lot of jumping in and out of bed, but when you read about children writing their names on body parts, photographing them and sending the photos to people they fancy (see here), it seems pretty tame.
Good to hear your boys are watching Big Bang Theory - something else they will have in common with their cousins. We are all big Sheldon fans - my iphone cover is the 'Doppler effect' (season 1 episode 6 I believe). 29,000 steps in a day is my personal best on my pedometer - it was just a normal working day but I walked where I could have taken a taxi or underground. ReplyDeleteIt may have been discredited in astro-physics in favour of the Big Bang Theory, but in human relationships, the Steady State Theory is still far more rewarding. Clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, I salute you once for each year of you being a catechist, especially as I am a do-nothing myself. However I think Sheldon and his buddies have greater opportunities to sow the seeds of their moral evangelism on young minds over several hours per week on television than you do by teaching catechism in the classroom over half-an-hour per week. So I don’t see it as being as harmless as you think with younger viewers, and certainly not without parental guidance. On the other hand, your blog has a pleasant aura about it with a compelling name. It contains many thoughtful comments on a great variety of subjects, and it would be nice if some of your other readers, who also often have something interesting to say, would give their feedback more frequently. Regards, ChrisM.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I think that's the nicest thing anyone has said about my blog! I read a blog that has 1500 subscribers and only gets 5 or 6 comments per post so I feel like I'm doing pretty well. Of course if I really wanted to get more comments I'd add more typos and say nasty things about people!
