Why are school holidays so long?

I'm sure I'm not the only one who can't wait for their children to go back to school this week? Peter has been off for 8 weeks and John for 6. School holidays used to leave me exhausted, but now I'm just bored and tired of listening to the boys bickering with each other. It's not like children need to help in the fields these days!

Children need down time but not 6 weeks at a time. I've no idea what working parents do with their offspring for 6 weeks. Some must leave them home alone and no doubt some kids are getting into trouble.

My suggestion is to shorten the holiday by three weeks and have 2 hours a week of after school activities during the school day e.g. drama rehearsals, band practice, chess club, basketball training, dance club. This would shorten the working week and give children more free time after school so they're not exhausted at the end of the school year. It would also give teachers who run drama clubs etc a bit of extra time.

  1. Children can be like mobile phones. Once you have one, you can't do without it, but if it goes off too frequently, it can be a real nuisance. Said by a man with no children, but with one mobile phone. So I'm technologically advanced, but not genealogically advanced. Nice sketch of a worn out woman. Is it yours? ChrisM

    1. I like the mobile phone analogy. I'm sure I'll be missing the boys by Friday! I found the sketch by googling "bored".
